The solution

wwwarcelona took the project, carried out an in-depth technical audit and rebuilt it on solid foundations applying the missing good development practices. From there, work was done on the platform as a product: design improvement, performance optimization, integration of the race catalog and development of its own reviews plugin that allows collaborating races to show participants’ ratings on their own websites, turning TrailrunAdvisor into a distributed recommender with a strong network effect.

Definition of the challenge

TrailrunAdvisor was born with the ambition of becoming the world’s reference platform for trail running and running: a place to find races, read reviews, discover routes and connect with a community of passionate runners. When wwwarcelona entered the project, the situation was the one that is often repeated: an idea with a lot of potential but a weak technical execution, carried out by a team without the necessary solvency. The result was an unstable platform, with accumulated technical debt and without the foundations to grow sustainably.

Product strategy and functional design

The design of TrailrunAdvisor reflects the energy and aesthetics of the trail running world: visual, dynamic and designed for a passionate community. We worked with Figma to create an interface that made it easy to discover races, read reviews and browse a catalog of thousands of events around the world, always maintaining an agile and inspiring experience.

Technical Architecture, Integrations, and Performance

The platform was rebuilt on WordPress, applying the best practices that the original project did not have: clean code architecture, optimized performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability. Specific integrations were made to manage the race catalog and a proprietary plugin was developed for the distributed review system. The design was worked on with Figma, creating an attractive and functional interface for the trail runner community.

One of the most unique developments of the project is the review plugin for collaborative races. With more than 1,000 integrated races around the world, a plugin was created that allows each collaborating race to embed a widget on its own website with the reviews and ratings of the runners who have participated. This turns TrailrunAdvisor into a small distributed recommender or inspirer: each collaborating race expands the reach of the platform and, at the same time, offers value to its own visitors. A very smart network growth strategy.
